The 2023 G.B. Burlotto Verduno Pelaverga DOC is a wonderfully distinctive expression of Pelaverga Piccolo, the obscure native variety grown around Verduno at the northern edge of Barolo. Burlotto is one of the historic champions of the grape, producing a wine that is almost the stylistic opposite of Barolo: pale, fragrant, delicate and immediately drinkable, yet loaded with personality. Burlotto ferments the destemmed fruit in open French-oak vats and stainless steel, then generally matures it in stainless steel to preserve its aromatics.

The 2023 is especially aromatic: translucent ruby in the glass, with wild strawberry, raspberry, rosehip and violet, followed by sage, pine and that unmistakable Pelaverga signature of freshly cracked white and black pepper. One contemporary tasting also found smoke and pine alongside raspberry and rose. That pepperiness isn't just tasting-note poetry—Pelaverga contains significant levels of rotundone, the same aromatic compound responsible for the pepper character in varieties such as Syrah.

On the palate, it's light-bodied, juicy and energetic, with crunchy red fruit, refreshing acidity and very fine tannins. The fruit quickly gives way to savory herbs, pepper and a subtle saline quality, finishing clean, spicy and remarkably refreshing.

This is a terrific wine to serve slightly chilled—roughly 55–60°F. Think somewhere between Frappato, Schiava and cru Beaujolais, but with an unmistakably Piedmontese savory character and considerably more pepper. It's superb with salumi, vitello tonnato, tajarin, mushroom dishes, roast chicken, rabbit or simply a plate of cheese and charcuterie.

In a nutshell: Ethereal and wonderfully weird—wild strawberry, raspberry and rose explode from the glass, followed by Burlotto Pelaverga's signature blast of cracked pepper, savory herbs and spice. Featherweight tannins and mouthwatering freshness make this one of Piedmont's most effortlessly charming reds.

Unless your delivery address is on the West Coast, we strongly discourage you from selecting “Ground Service” as your shipping method. During the winter and summer months, weather conditions (temperature) and longer delivery times can often result in the spoilage of your order. It doesn’t make sense to invest in fine wines and then take the chance of ruining them due environmental factors during transit (faster and safer delivery generally isn’t much more expensive). We don’t make an additional profit on accelerated delivery, but we frequently recommend faster shipping options to our customers outside the West Coast.
You must be 21 years of age to order or receive alcoholic beverages. Any shipments containing alcoholic beverages are sent with an “Adult Signature Required” sticker, and the common carrier that delivers our merchandise is required to ask and check for identification upon delivery. This means that an adult will have to be present at the time of delivery. Please consider shipping to an office address.
During periods of extreme weather, we attempt to ship wines at the beginning of each week in order to get shipments to you before the weekend. This is because we have no control over the temperature conditions at our freight carriers’ warehouses. The result may be that your shipment doesn’t go out the day that you place an order.
We ship by Fedex or Fedex Ground. Our prices include packaging materials. Insurance may be available for an additional charge.
