2023 Bodegas Edetaria Garnatxa Negra Via Edetana Terra Alta DO
Regular price $21.98
Bodegas Edetà ria is a premier boutique winery located in Gandesa within the Terra Alta D.O. region of southern Catalonia, Spain. Established in 2003 by founder Joan Àngel Lliberia, it has grown to become the benchmark estate for high-quality, terroir-driven wines in the region.
The winery is named after the "Via Edetana," an ancient Roman road that historically connected Tortosa and Zaragoza, celebrating the deep Mediterranean wine heritage of the area. Joan Àngel Lliberia, an agricultural engineer with an OIV Master in Wine Management, returned to his hometown after years working in multinational corporations. He created Edetà ria to honor his grandfather (an enologist) and parents (viticulturists).
EdetĂ ria controls its entire process by exclusively producing wines from its own 60 to 70 hectares of estate vineyards. A significant portion of their vines are over 50 to 60 years old, which naturally keeps grape yields low and flavors highly concentrated. Their vineyards span five distinct soil types, most notably Panal (fossilized sand dunes), alongside clay, limestone, and pebbles from ancient riverbeds.
The 2023 Bodegas EdetĂ ria Via Edetana Garnatxa Negra is a captivating expression of old-vine Garnacha from Spain's rugged Terra Alta appellation, where limestone soils, Mediterranean sunshine, and cooling inland winds produce wines of remarkable purity and finesse. Rather than emphasizing sheer ripeness, EdetĂ ria crafts a Garnacha that is elegant, mineral-driven, and unmistakably expressive of place.
The nose is vibrant and layered with aromas of wild strawberry, black cherry, raspberry preserves, and ripe plum, complemented by notes of Mediterranean herbs, crushed rock, cocoa, dried thyme, and subtle baking spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a silky, polished texture, revealing flavors of red and black berries, black cherry, licorice, and blood orange, framed by fine tannins and lively acidity. A restrained touch of French oak adds hints of vanilla, cedar, and sweet spice, while the finish is long, savory, and lifted by a distinctive mineral freshness. The wine is typically produced from equal parts Garnatxa Negra and Garnatxa Peluda (Hairy Grenache), aged for approximately 12 months in French oak, lending additional complexity without masking the fruit.
EdetĂ ria has become one of the standard-bearers of modern Terra Alta, producing wines that combine the generosity of Garnacha with uncommon precision and balance. This bottling is exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with grilled lamb, Spanish sausages, roast pork, mushroom dishes, or smoky barbecue.
Rich enough to satisfy lovers of Rhône blends yet fresh enough to appeal to Pinot Noir enthusiasts, the 2023 Via Edetana Garnatxa Negra is a compelling introduction to one of Spain's most exciting wine regions. It can be enjoyed now with a brief decant or cellared comfortably for 5–8 years.
Shipping Policy
- Unless your delivery address is on the West Coast, we strongly discourage you from selecting “Ground Service” as your shipping method. During the winter and summer months, weather conditions (temperature) and longer delivery times can often result in the spoilage of your order. It doesn’t make sense to invest in fine wines and then take the chance of ruining them due environmental factors during transit (faster and safer delivery generally isn’t much more expensive). We don’t make an additional profit on accelerated delivery, but we frequently recommend faster shipping options to our customers outside the West Coast.
- You must be 21 years of age to order or receive alcoholic beverages. Any shipments containing alcoholic beverages are sent with an “Adult Signature Required” sticker, and the common carrier that delivers our merchandise is required to ask and check for identification upon delivery. This means that an adult will have to be present at the time of delivery. Please consider shipping to an office address.
- During periods of extreme weather, we attempt to ship wines at the beginning of each week in order to get shipments to you before the weekend. This is because we have no control over the temperature conditions at our freight carriers’ warehouses. The result may be that your shipment doesn’t go out the day that you place an order.
- We ship by Fedex or Fedex Ground. Our prices include packaging materials. Insurance may be available for an additional charge.
- Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. will arrange for shipment on behalf of the buyer, to an address specified by the buyer, provided that Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. in its sole judgment believes that such shipment will not subject Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. to the risk of any sort of legal action or other harm. If a buyer lives in a state where the direct shipment of wine by Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. violates the law, we suggest that the buyer provide an alternative address in another state or have their wine shipped to a third-party storage facility in a direct shipping-friendly state.
- Various states impose limitations on the quantity of alcoholic beverages that may be purchased and brought into their jurisdiction by a purchaser from another state without requiring the purchaser, a seller or shipper to possess certain licenses or permits. Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. does not, as a condition of sale, assume any obligation nor bear any responsibility whatsoever for applying or obtaining any permits or licenses. Therefore, we recommend that you investigate the possibility of such limitations, and determine the manner in which alcoholic beverages shall be brought into your state from California, so as to comply with all of your state’s requirements.
