97 Decanter - Winemaker Chris Carpenter says that his Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon from Mt. Veeder is intended to serve as a counterpoint to the La Jota Cabernet, which is from Howell Mountain, but that each wine showcases a softer expression of mountain Cabernet, and one that is poised for earlier drinking for collectors who stash bottles of the single vineyard Cabernet wines from Lokoya in their cellar. The soils atop Mt. Veeder are volcanic and sedimentary, and two sites provide the grapes for Mt. Brave. One is the Mt. Brave Vineyard, formerly Chateau Potelle Vineyard, and the site is above the fog line on the northern part of Mt. Veeder, where the soils are well-draining, and yields are generally two tons per acre in good vintages. The other is Veeder Peak Estate. Each site is about 24ha. This blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet France, 2% Merlot, 1% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot was aged 23 months in 80% new French oak. Super fragrant with black fruits, black cherry, and graphite minerality with violets and cherry liqueur undertones. Full-bodied with pronounced tannins that have a chalkiness about them, balanced by very soft and supple fruit that makes this wine so approachable in its youth. An extended finish is marked by blue fruit and pronounced garrigue, blue agave syrup, sage, and crushed cocao nibs. Mt. Brave is part of the Jackson Family Wines portfolio.

Wine has been crafted from Mt. Veeder soils since the early 1860s. Along with other Napa winemaking pioneers such as Charles Krug and Agoston Haraszthy, Captain Stalham Wing, who arrived in 1853, showed the first Mt. Veeder wine at the Napa County Fair in 1864.

Mt. Veeder is the largest AVA in the Napa Valley, established in 1993, but numbers don’t really tell the story. The mountain is 25 square miles, or 15,000 acres, stretching from Carneros to Oakville, and down the grade to Glen Ellen. Yet just 1,000 acres are planted to grapes, less than 2 percent of Napa Valley’s production with the lowest average yields in the region. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted variety, but Malbec does exceptionally well here.

The 2021 Mt. Brave Cabernet Sauvignon is a highly acclaimed, mountain-grown red wine from the Mt. Veeder appellation in Napa Valley, known for its intense structure,99-point rating from critics, and refined elegance.

Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

Aromas of violets, ripe blueberries, blackcurrants, with subtle hints of graphite, lavender, and herbs. Medium to full-bodied, with velvety yet firm tannins. It is noted for its velvety texture, with notes of cassis, currant, and "killer midpalate" depth. Long, structured, and polished, featuring savory accents of tobacco, mocha, and mountain garrigue.

Unless your delivery address is on the West Coast, we strongly discourage you from selecting “Ground Service” as your shipping method. During the winter and summer months, weather conditions (temperature) and longer delivery times can often result in the spoilage of your order. It doesn’t make sense to invest in fine wines and then take the chance of ruining them due environmental factors during transit (faster and safer delivery generally isn’t much more expensive). We don’t make an additional profit on accelerated delivery, but we frequently recommend faster shipping options to our customers outside the West Coast.
You must be 21 years of age to order or receive alcoholic beverages. Any shipments containing alcoholic beverages are sent with an “Adult Signature Required” sticker, and the common carrier that delivers our merchandise is required to ask and check for identification upon delivery. This means that an adult will have to be present at the time of delivery. Please consider shipping to an office address.
During periods of extreme weather, we attempt to ship wines at the beginning of each week in order to get shipments to you before the weekend. This is because we have no control over the temperature conditions at our freight carriers’ warehouses. The result may be that your shipment doesn’t go out the day that you place an order.
We ship by Fedex or Fedex Ground. Our prices include packaging materials. Insurance may be available for an additional charge.
