2021 Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion Pessac Leognan
Regular price $129.98
96-98 Vinous - The 2021 possesses mind-blowing intensity and stunning persistence. Bright red-fleshed fruit, blood orange, mint, dried flowers and exotic spice caress the senses as the 2021 shows off its sheer allure. I don't think I have ever tasted a young Carmes with this level of precision. The blend is 40% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, aged in 70% new oak, 20% new foudres and 10% in amphora. As always, Les Carmes sees some whole cluster, 45% in 2021, an unusual technique in Bordeaux, but one that works so well here. The 2021 is a magical wine. That's all there is to it.
The 2021 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the defining wines of the 2021 Bordeaux vintage—a wine that transcends the challenges of the growing season through meticulous viticulture and one of the most distinctive winemaking philosophies in Bordeaux. Built around an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc (40%), alongside 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, it combines elegance, precision, and extraordinary aromatic complexity. Whole-cluster fermentation (45%), aging in a combination of new oak, large foudres, and amphorae, and the visionary direction of Guillaume Pouthier have given the estate a style unlike any of its neighbors.
In the glass, the wine is a deep ruby with violet reflections. The nose is remarkably layered, offering black raspberry, wild blackberry, red currant, crushed violets, rose petals, graphite, cedar, cigar wrapper, cocoa nib, licorice, and damp forest floor. As it opens, more exotic nuances emerge—sage, black pepper, menthol, smoked herbs, and subtle floral perfume—creating an almost Côte-Rôtie-like aromatic lift while remaining unmistakably Pessac-Léognan.
The palate is where Les Carmes separates itself from nearly every other Bordeaux in the vintage. Rather than relying on sheer weight, it delivers incredible tension and energy. Layers of dark cherry, plum skin, blackcurrant, blood orange zest, graphite, crushed stone, and bittersweet chocolate glide across an exceptionally refined framework of silky yet persistent tannins. Bright, vibrant acidity provides freshness and precision, while the whole-cluster fermentation contributes subtle spice and savory complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is exceptionally long, echoing with mineral notes, cedar, dried flowers, cocoa, and saline nuances.
Stylistically, this is a modern interpretation of classic Bordeaux—less about power than purity and detail. It possesses the perfume and transparency of a great Chambolle-Musigny, the mineral drive of top Pessac-Léognan, and the structural finesse that promises decades of evolution. Many critics have considered it among the greatest successes of the 2021 vintage, with Antonio Galloni describing it as "very possibly the wine of the vintage."
A profoundly elegant, intellectual Bordeaux that prioritizes finesse over opulence. The 2021 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a wine of haunting aromatics, remarkable precision, and exceptional aging potential—one of the benchmark wines not only of the vintage but of contemporary Bordeaux.
Shipping Policy
- Unless your delivery address is on the West Coast, we strongly discourage you from selecting “Ground Service” as your shipping method. During the winter and summer months, weather conditions (temperature) and longer delivery times can often result in the spoilage of your order. It doesn’t make sense to invest in fine wines and then take the chance of ruining them due environmental factors during transit (faster and safer delivery generally isn’t much more expensive). We don’t make an additional profit on accelerated delivery, but we frequently recommend faster shipping options to our customers outside the West Coast.
- You must be 21 years of age to order or receive alcoholic beverages. Any shipments containing alcoholic beverages are sent with an “Adult Signature Required” sticker, and the common carrier that delivers our merchandise is required to ask and check for identification upon delivery. This means that an adult will have to be present at the time of delivery. Please consider shipping to an office address.
- During periods of extreme weather, we attempt to ship wines at the beginning of each week in order to get shipments to you before the weekend. This is because we have no control over the temperature conditions at our freight carriers’ warehouses. The result may be that your shipment doesn’t go out the day that you place an order.
- We ship by Fedex or Fedex Ground. Our prices include packaging materials. Insurance may be available for an additional charge.
- Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. will arrange for shipment on behalf of the buyer, to an address specified by the buyer, provided that Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. in its sole judgment believes that such shipment will not subject Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. to the risk of any sort of legal action or other harm. If a buyer lives in a state where the direct shipment of wine by Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. violates the law, we suggest that the buyer provide an alternative address in another state or have their wine shipped to a third-party storage facility in a direct shipping-friendly state.
- Various states impose limitations on the quantity of alcoholic beverages that may be purchased and brought into their jurisdiction by a purchaser from another state without requiring the purchaser, a seller or shipper to possess certain licenses or permits. Vintage Wine Merchants, Inc. does not, as a condition of sale, assume any obligation nor bear any responsibility whatsoever for applying or obtaining any permits or licenses. Therefore, we recommend that you investigate the possibility of such limitations, and determine the manner in which alcoholic beverages shall be brought into your state from California, so as to comply with all of your state’s requirements.
