2023 Occidental Pinot Noir Freestone Occidental

Regular price $79.98

98 Robert Parker - The Occidental Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental is incredibly expressive and detailed! Its aromas open slowly from blueberry, rhubarb and cranberry to tones of bitter orange, amaro, mossy bark and lavender, continuing to reveal new accents with each return to the glass. Light-bodied, it floods the mouth with fragrant, detailed fruit supported by chalky tannins and focused, shimmery acidity that calls you in for another sip. It has a haunting finish loaded with spicy layers, and it's very difficult to put this delicious wine down. Drink it now for its transparency and perfume, or allow it to develop savory complexity in bottle over the next decade.

94 Wine Spectator - Boasts blackberry and plum fruit enlivened by a light savory thread, while anise and iris notes add range through the sleek, tangy finish. Shows a nice underlying mineral edge, which adds subtle tension throughout. Refined.

Occidental Vineyards, founded by renowned vintner Steve Kistler, is dedicated to producing world-class Pinot Noir from the coastal headlands of the Freestone-Occidental area on the Sonoma Coast. Steve Kistler’s passion for coastal vineyards began during his early career at Ridge Vineyards, where he developed an appreciation for the unique characteristics of wines from maritime climates. This passion led him to establish Occidental in 2011, focusing exclusively on Pinot Noir from some of the coolest and latest ripening sites in western Sonoma.

The vineyards at Occidental are situated on a southwest-facing ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean, at elevations of 400-750 feet. These sites are characterized by their challenging maritime weather conditions, which include powerful spring storms and persistent fog. Despite these challenges, the unique climate allows for a slow, steady ripening process that promotes the development of fruit with remarkable physiological maturity at lower sugar levels. This results in Pinot Noirs that are crystalline, with vivid aromatics and intense red fruit flavors layered with savory and mineral notes.

Occidental Vineyards employs sustainable farming practices, with an emphasis on organic techniques to maintain a natural balance and minimize human intervention. The vineyard team, many of whom have worked with Steve Kistler for over thirty years, meticulously manages the canopy and thins the fruit to ensure uniform ripeness at harvest. This dedication to quality is reflected in Occidental’s wines, which are celebrated for their freshness, energy, and expression of the coastal terroir.

Catherine Kistler, Steve’s daughter, has joined the Occidental team, bringing a fresh perspective and continuing the family legacy of winemaking excellence. Raised in the vineyards and winery, Catherine has developed a deep understanding and passion for viticulture and enology. Her involvement signifies a new generation’s commitment to maintaining the high standards and innovative spirit that have defined Occidental. Catherine’s role includes overseeing various aspects of the vineyard and winery operations, ensuring that the meticulous care and attention to detail established by her father are upheld. Her dedication and vision are helping to shape the future of Occidental, further cementing its reputation as a leading producer of exceptional Pinot Noir on the Sonoma Coast.

The Freestone-Occidental pinot noir includes a blend of fruit from the Bodega Headlands, Occidental Station, and Bodega Ridge vineyards. It also shares the same winemaking techniques as the Occidental vineyard-designated pinot noirs.  All pinot noirs are fermented with native yeasts and native Malo-Lactic bacteria.
