Plum with hints of ruby, this Alexander Valley Merlot has aromas of ripe cherry and currant mixed with inklings of allspice and nutmeg. Velvety, sweet tannins pair exceptionally well with the dark fruit, resulting in a rich, sumptuous mouth feel. Judicious use of French Oak adds hints of spice and structure to this food-friendly wine. 100% of this Merlot was from the Swallowfork vineyard north of the Taft winery in the heart of Alexander Valley.Â
Hand Crafted Wines with real local roots:  Family owned & operated since 1979. The term “garagistes†originated in Bordeaux in the 1980’s and referred to a group of innovative winemakers who produced exceptional wines in their garages rather than in grand chateaux. Since 1979, Taft Street winery has carried on the garagistes tradition of innovation and excellence in a chateau-alternative locale.
The story begins on Taft Street in the Rockridge area of Oakland, not far from the University of California at Berkeley. Brothers John and Mike Tierney were students at Cal.  Both were cooking part time in Berkeley restaurants and became intrigued with the developing food and wine scene.
They started making wine and John proved his talents early on. He soon made wine not only for himself but for a rapidly growing fan club of family and friends. His efforts during this time earned him a BEST OF SHOW AWARD at the California State Fair – the state’s highest honor for a home winemaker.
From a backyard Berkeley garage to an old apple processing plant in Sebastopol, California, the family at Taft Street continues in the garagistes traditions to this day, crafting limited production, crowd pleasing wines from select Sonoma County vineyards.
