The Year to Splurge - Treat Yo Self
You don't need to hear Grumpy Santa singing 'Deck the Halls" and humming to cheesy carols to let you know what time of year it is... it's ho-ho-ho-holiday time!!!
But big 'ol celebrations might have been a thing of the past, as Covid-2020 has other plans for us. Even so, every grey cloud has a silver lining, so make the most of your down-sized holiday gatherings! With less family, less friends and less mouths to feed, all of the sudden, your Thanksgiving meal budget just got a lot of wiggle room. You won't be buying a 20 pound turkey and sack of potatoes. No need to buy 10 pounds of butter and gallons of cranberry. With all that extra dinner budget, what to do? What to do? Vintage Vinny says, "TREAT YO SELF"!!
We asked some of our Vintage team members, 'given the circumstances what would you splurge on for Thanksgiving'??
Harry aka Grumpy Santa
Grumpy Santa calls himself the most interesting wine merchant in the world and says he won't be drinking Dos Equis. Grumpy says,
"Memories of driving through the bucolic Tuscan country side makes me yearn for Brunellodi Montalcino every damn day. The Brunello's power, grace and deep resonating fruit make me smile all day long. I’ve only had Soldera one time in my life and it left an indelible mark – it was a life changing experience. This wine is so rare, so classy and so wonderful. It deserves the price tag."
Santa also says, "you know, sometimes you just need a nice bottle of Monty to wash down the bad taste of Covid." Funny thing, I agree with him.
"While on a wine tasting trip through France, I found one in particular took my breath away, Pinot Noir by producer Francois Ganevat. Several weeks later while back in the states, the wine still fresh on my mind, I requested from our sales rep to send me a few cases to the store. His immediate response was laughter followed by 'Are you being serious? I can MAYBE get you one bottle a year.' This year, by some miraculous turn of events, we received 3 bottles. While not particularly expensive, this rare gem is truly a treat if you can obtain it. And since while we're at it, I'm also all over the DRC of Switzerland - Gantenbein."
Joselyn aka JP
"I think it's too easy to take for granted the beautiful and amazing terrior we have right here at home. In the Napa Valley, no one understands that better than Bond who have five exquisite and diverse 'Grand Cru' vineyard sites scattered around the valley. Quella, my favorite, on the east side of the valley, is the best of the five when young. As good as it gets from Napa. I like to contrast wines though, so I'll probably try it next to an opulent Dal Forno Amarone."
"There's only one producer on earth for me that makes wines of affordable luxury in both red and white, and that is Jean-Lous Chave, making spectacular wines from the breath-taking Hermitage hill in the Northern Rhone valley. The Marsanne-based Blanc is rich and spicy, perfect with holiday fare. And the Rouge is arguably the best Syrah in the world. These wines are a great deal at almost any price."
